This is an assortment of images we made in December of 2014 while on a photography workshop on the Osa Peninsula. It was a great place to visit, the participants and the instructors from Epic Destinations were great, and the animals cooperated as well. We had warm but humid weather, and even had a thunderstorm at the end to appreciate that it was in a rain forest. The Bosque del Cabo Lodge overlooks the Pacific Ocean, and Gulfo Dulci on the inland side. The lodge is at the southern end of the Osa Peninsula, which is on the southwest corner of Costa Rica.

Pendleton Horse Parade

One of the special parts of the Pendleton Roundup is the parade at the end of the week. There are no motorized vehicles, everyone seems to know everyone else, and there is a tremendous amount of good will displayed. The Roundup Queens and Indian Princesses from most of the Northwest rodeos are present. I felt fortunate to get a large number of eye-contact portraits of some beautiful people this year, 2011.

This trip was in the fall of 2010, where we spent almost 6 weeks visiting the London area, Denmark, the countries along the Rhine from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland, Austria, and finally Prague.

As a note to photographers, all images in this collection were made with two Lumix DMC-ZS7's, or the travel zoom series. These were chosen for their zoom range, excellent video, and the fact that the tour guide (me) had imposed a one-suitcase rule. I felt a little naked traveling without our Nikon dslr's and video cameras, but we were truly impressed with these little cameras for most things and really appreciated not having to bring all the extra gear. These particular models have built in GPS, and I would recommend leaving it on all the time. Battery drainage was not a problem and it saved me a few times when I could not remember the name of a particular location. All images were processed with Apple's Aperture.

We included the easily accessible portions of Canyonland National Park with the areas known collectively as the Grand Staircase. The highest rock layers at Grand Canyon NP are the lowest layers at Zion NP. The highest at Zion NP are the lowest at Arches NP. The area in between, Escalante, Capitol Reef and Bryce Canyon NP's are looked at as the Grand "Staircase".

We visited Arches National Park and the other parks in Southern Utah at a great time of year: April. We had cold rainy, snowy, freezing days followed by balmy sunny days. The saturated rocks were full of color, the sky was clear, and the lighting was wonderful.

We spent a few days visiting areas of the Florida Everglades that were within easy walking distance of the road. We didn't take any airboat tours, but did take a tour boat into the Ten Thousand Island area of the Everglades. It was February so many things were not in bloom, and the alligators were mostly sunning on the south-facing banks during the middle of the day.

These images were made around Labor Day when the fall colors were at their peak and the weather was perfectly clear all around the mountain. By the time we left the Denali National Park, the colors were already starting to lose their vibrancy. Several years ago, we experienced summer green, autumn red and yellow, and winter snow, all in three days.

These photos were taken on the Kenai Penensula this Fall. We took a tour through the Kenai Fjords National Park. The weather cooperated beautifully and the marine life tried to cooperate, but taking sharp photos from a bouncing tour boat was a challenge. After Seward and the Fjord area, we travelled to Homer.

These are some of the most interesting pictures from this current trip. Spring seemed to be late this year, the meadows were still flooded, the buffalo calves were smaller than usual for Memorial Day, and the elk calves were not to be seen yet. Weather was shirt-sleeve so it was a good trip.

We have gone to the Pendleton Roundup for the past three years, and will for at least two more. This is a family-friendly atmosphere with a variety of activities. Our favorite time is slack time in the mornings: no crowds, no admission, no restrictions on where you go, and a great time to see and photograph lots of competition.

Yellowstone Wildlife

We have enjoyed having sufficient time to travel, watch, and photograph various wild animals. Yellowstone National Park is one of our favorite locations, although we have gotten beautiful images in the local refuges and the greenbelt behind our home. The initial images in this collection were from the Grizzly Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone. They are rescued animals and a visit to the site is well worth the time.
